Myrrha Guzman
When Myrrha Guzman graduated from law school in 1994, she was uncertain what direction to take in her legal career. She came across the newly formed CAC and joined as a volunteer, soon becoming its first paid staff lawyer.
“It made me realize that public service was what I wanted to do,” said Guzman, who next worked as a public defender. As of 2023, she was a lawyer for the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois, handling complaints against attorneys.
Guzman had unusual opportunities for a young attorney during her three years at CAC, including arguing a case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. The Court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction in the case, which was about the expansion of DuPage Airport, but after that, the airport authority was more careful about consulting with the public. Guzman also issued two reports (Tollgate I and Tollgate II) on the challenges of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority.
Her time at CAC also armed her with skills that proved useful to her as a resident of Elmhurst. When the cul-de-sac on which she lived was overrun with cars, creating a hazard for the small children who played in the area, Guzman knew how to petition the city, which resulted in a ban on parking on one side of the street.
Over the past 30 years, Guzman has maintained her involvement with CAC and is still serving as the President of the Board of Directors.
Over her years with the Center, she has met many people who have become professional associates and lifelong friends.
