JUNE

Monday, June 23, Noon - Brown Bag Lunch - Bring a Lunch and Bring a Friend! The Federal Election Commission (FEC) Debacle. The FEC is the agency that is supposed to oversee campaign finance during election season. It is an appointed public body by the U.S. Senate. In a time when more money has ever been raised during federal campaigns in America's history, the FEC is effectively defunct due to a lack of a quorum to hold meetings. How is this impacting campaigns? Who is monitoring government elections?

JULY

Tuesday, July 8 - 7 PM. Should Voters Be Required to Show Government Issued Identification to Vote? Voter Safeguard or Voter Disenfranchisement? The US Supreme Court recently ruled that an Indiana law mandating the production of a valid state ID prior to voting is an acceptable state law. The result is dozens of states across the country now introducing voter state identification laws. Does voter ID really protect the integrity of elections?

Tuesday, July 15 Noon - Brown Bag Lunch - Bring a Lunch and Bring a Friend! Guantanamo Bay, detainees and the law in the wake of the US Supreme Court decision of Boumediene v. Bush. A recent Supreme Court ruling stated that the Military Commissions Act of 2006 was unconstitutional. The Military Commissions Act stripped the federal courts of jurisdiction to hear detainees habeas petitions that challenged detainees? detentions and designations as enemy combatants. As a result, the door is open for detainees to challenge their detentions in federal court. Visit the Center for a historical perspective and implications for the future.

Thursday, July 17, 7:30 PM INTERN NIGHT! Every summer the Center hosts law, college, and high school interns who work on public policy projects under the direction of a community lawyer. Visit the Center to hear what their experiences were working to build democracy!
