Citizen Advocacy Center Citizen Initiative Award 2003 Recipients

The Elmhurst Orange Ribbon Committee

Indian Plains High School

In December 2003, the Center's recognized citizens who act as catalysts for more citizen participation in the democratic process through the Citizen Intiative Award. Recipients have demonstrated significant and informed civic participation in their communities and by their example have inspired others to build democracy.

The Elmhurst Orange Ribbon Committee

The Elmhurst Orange Ribbon Committee, was awarded a Citizen Initiative Award for their exceptional community involvement in promoting responsible development in Elmhurst. "We are proud to accept this award on behalf of the thousands of residents who tied an orange ribbon around their tree as an expression of their desire to maintain the 'small town character' of Elmhurst. We feel strongly about the responsible development not only of Block 300, but, of our entire town. This grassroots effort clearly illustrates the true spirit of Elmhurst residents and we will continue to monitor future projects for the benefit of our community", said spokesperson Shelia Danno. The Orange Ribbon Committee had a countywide impact. Representatives from nearly half of DuPage County municipalities have joined to create DuPage Citizens for Responsible Development. Their mission is "to maintain community character and local tax bases through the promotion of responsible development." For more information, email Dupage Citizens@aol.com

Indian Plains High School

Indian Plains High School was awarded the Citizen Initiative Award for its outstanding civic and advocacy education program that has brought hands-on education to a new level. "This is a team effort at every level, from the student leaders who bring student body concerns to delegation meetings to the teachers and administrators who assist in resolutions," said Principal Kevin Meyers. Students learned about "practicing daily democracy" through the I.P.H.S. school-side Constitutional Convention where administration, staff and student body delegates drafted and ratified a Bill of Rights. Delegates continue to meet regularly to identify and resolve school wide concerns, such as increased library resources and increased access to the computer lab. The program will soon expand to include neighborhood civic projects.
